Delta Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation in Bury

The 27th May to 14th June saw the return of the Dallaglio CycleSlam, the biennial flagship fundraising event of the Dallaglio RugbyWorks charity. The charity was founded by former England Rugby Union Captain and World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio, and its vision is to get teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained education, employment or training.

The 2018 CycleSlam is the 5th, with the event starting back in 2010. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with the medical team since the 2014, and it is an event I look forward to with great excitement. It is a unique challenge, with a whole spectrum of factors that need taking into account to ensure that we keep everyone safe as well as ensuring they get as much enjoyment out of it as possible.

The starting point this year was Evian in France, finishing approximately 1800km later in Split in Croatia. In between that was over 30,000m of climbing – mainly in the Alps and Italian Lakes. The weather ranged from 40 degree heat to torrential downpours. 27 core riders did the incredible job of completing the whole ride, with around 100 more joining them for various stages.

From a physio/medical point of view, we have to deal with almost anything – ranging from standard physiotherapy treatments to medical emergencies, hypothermia to hyperthermia and everything in between, including this year a car hanging over a precipice with driver and dog requiring attention!

And the upshot of all this? The CycleSlam and its riders have raised over £1,000,000 this time around, and with more to come. What an amazing achievement! What these (non-professional) cyclists do for 3 weeks is sometimes beyond comprehension – 3 weeks of cycling up to 170km per day, over alpine passes and Italian mountains, with only 2 rest days and all for charity. Now THAT is social responsibility.
